FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know about Torpedo SwimRun

+What is SwimRun?

SwimRun is a multi-sport discipline that combines running and swimming in alternating segments. You run, then swim, then run again — repeating across a race course. Unlike triatathlon, you don't have a bike, and you complete the entire race with the same partner (if doing team format) or solo.

+What gear do I need?

Essential gear: running shoes (takkies), swim goggles, and a whistle. Most racers wear a wetsuit for warmth, but it's optional. We provide swim caps and timing chips. Bring a transition bag if you want to change shoes between water and land segments.

+Can I do this as my first race?

Yes! Start with a Blue Grade race like Plaisir Short or Cosy. These are designed for first-timers and beginners. If you're comfortable in both water and trail running, you're ready.

+What if I can't swim well?

Safety is our priority. All race routes have safety protocols including swim caps with visibility, support kayaks, and spotters. We recommend practicing in open water before race day. Choose shorter distances first (kids or short courses) and build confidence.

+Can I do this solo?

Green and Blue grade races (Kids, Family) are Individual entry. Red Grade (Cape) and Black Grade (Skins) require a Team of 2 — two equally competent athletes who start and finish together, no more than 10m apart at all times.

+What's the difference between Black and Blue grades?

Blue Grade races are friendly, scenic, and perfect for all abilities. Red Grade is for experienced tethered pairs — real distance, real exposure, real decisions. Black Grade (Skins) is no-wetsuit in open ocean, entry by approval only.

+How long is each race?

Long courses are 17km total. Short courses are 6km. Kids Super Sprint is 2km. Times vary by ability and terrain.

+What time of year are races?

Plaisir is in September (warm water season). Cape is in January (peak season). Check our calendar for exact dates.

+What's the water temperature?

Plaisir Lake: 18-20°C (warm). Cape Atlantic: 16-18°C (cold). Wetsuits are highly recommended for all Atlantic races.

+Do I need to bring my own wetsuit?

Wetsuits are not provided. We recommend bringing your own 3-4mm neoprene suit. Some racing supply shops offer rentals if you don't own one.

+What if I'm injured or DNF?

If you get injured on course, support teams will assist you. DNF (Did Not Finish) is fully supported — safety always comes first. Your bib and timing chip will be collected.

+Is there a time limit?

Each race has a cut-off time to ensure you finish within daylight and safety windows. Check your specific race details for timing.

+What's the age minimum?

Green Grade (Kids): 6+. Blue Grade (Family): 12+ (guardian must co-sign indemnity and email a CV for ages 12–18). Red Grade (Cape): 18+ (special permission available for ages 16–18 with guardian approval). Black Grade (Skins): 18+ approved teams only.

+How do I register?

Registration opens 8 weeks before each race on Quicket. Black Grade (Skins) entry is by approval only — email register@torpedoswimrun.com to apply. Entry is assessed by our swim safety panel.

+What's included in the race fee?

Race fee includes: timing, swim cap, race vest, full safety support, finish refreshments, and complimentary race photos. See individual race details for specifics.

+Can I bring spectators?

Yes! Spectators are welcome to watch from designated areas. Some transitions have great viewing points. Check your specific race guide.

+Are there prizes?

Yes, we have prize categories for top finishers in various age groups and categories. Prize-giving happens shortly after the race finishes.

+Is Torpedo SwimRun sustainable?

Yes. Torpedo is committed to conservation and low-impact events. We partner with environmental organisations and maintain all our race areas. See our Conservation page for details.

+Can I do multiple races?

Absolutely! Many racers do all three events in a season. You'll get a sense of progression from Plaisir to Cape. Some adventurers even do multiple races in one day.

+What's a Torpedo Tours?

Torpedo Tours are guided SwimRun experiences for groups, corporates, and teams. They're shorter, less formal, and focused on fun and community. Perfect for team building.
